CELEBRATING 2500 YEARS OF VALOUR:

Unveiling of King Leonidas Painting at Pan-Laconian

Family Centre

28 January 2024 "A brushstroke of history, a canvas of culture – Join us as we honour our heritage and commemorate the Battle of Thermopylae in style." The Pan-Laconian Society of South Australia, in collaboration with the Karitsa Community in Adelaide, is thrilled to announce an inspiring event set to bring the vibrant history of Laconia to life. On Saturday, February 17th, 2024, all roads in our community lead to the Pan-Laconian Family Centre to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae. This significant milestone, though slightly delayed by global pandemic restrictions, will be celebrated with the special unveiling of a magnificent painting of King Leonidas of Sparta, masterfully crafted by Tony Malavazos, a gifted local artist with Laconian and Karitsa Roots. The Battle of Thermopylae, a pivotal moment in both Greek and Western history, carries a timeless significance that transcends the ages. Despite the four-year delay in our commemoration due to the recent global pandemic, it stands as a testament to our unwavering dedication to preserving our cherished cultural heritage. At the heart of this remarkable event lies the unveiling of Tony Malavazos' closely guarded masterpiece – a breathtaking painting of King Leonidas. This extraordinary work of art will find its permanent home at the Pan-Laconian Family Centre, thanks to the generous support of a local benefactor. Driven by an impassioned commitment to honour his cultural heritage, Tony Malavazos sees this artwork as his way of giving back to the community. Through his artistry, he endeavours to encapsulate the essence and historical significance of his Laconian roots. Dina Housos, president of the Pan-Laconian Society, shares her excitement, declaring that the event presents "a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our Laconian heritage and pay tribute to this momentous historical event." Michael Malavazos, president of the Karitsa Community of SA, echoes this sentiment, describing it as "a fitting homage to King Leonidas and the brave individuals who stood by his side at Thermopylae." This unforgettable evening promises cultural enrichment, an appreciation for the arts, and the warmth of our close-knit community. Laconians and friends of all ages and backgrounds are expected to grace this event, ensuring it becomes a truly inclusive celebration. Special guests and dignitaries will grace us with their presence. Local mayors, representatives from fraternal Greek clubs, regional brotherhoods in SA, and sister Laconian clubs from across Australia will also be part of this memorable occasion. The event will commence at 6:30 p.m., with the highly anticipated unveiling scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, at the Pan-Laconian Family Centre, located at 24 Aldridge Avenue, Plympton Park. We are deeply honoured to welcome Dr. David Rafferty, ARC DECRA Fellow from the Department of Historical and Classical Studies at the University of Adelaide, as our Guest Speaker for the evening. Dr. Rafferty will provide invaluable insights into the significance of King Leonidas and the Battle of Thermopylae. Join us on this extraordinary journey through time as we unite to celebrate our heritage, honour our past, and inspire the generations to come. Together, we create a canvas of culture, and discover the spirit that unites us all. Let us treasure this moment and forge memories that will resonate for another 2500 years.
