Grant Stevens Appointed South Australia’s New Governor

November 2026 South Australian Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has been appointed the state’s 37th Governor, succeeding Frances Adamson, whose five-year term ended last week. The appointment was announced by South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, who said he had nominated Mr Stevens to King Charles III, who formally approved the appointment. The new Governor is scheduled to be sworn in on December 9. The 62-year-old has served as Police Commissioner since 2015, having joined South Australia Police in 1982. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he also served as the state’s COVID-19 coordinator. Mr Stevens said he was “deeply honoured” by the appointment, describing it as an opportunity to continue serving the South Australian community. He also expressed his appreciation for Ms Adamson’s work as Governor. Mr Stevens will officially leave the police force on October 23, with Deputy Commissioner Linda Williams taking over as acting commissioner. In his new role, Mr Stevens is expected to focus on road safety, including efforts to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries across the state. Ms Adamson, who became Governor in 2021, welcomed her successor and expressed confidence that Mr Stevens would make an excellent Governor.
