Migrants continue to die in the
The Greek Coast Guard continues the Search and Rescue
operation South off island on the weekend after a boat carrying
migrants capsized and some 8 people are missing. 37 people
have been rescued so far.

A total of 37 people were rescued late Thursday, including one
child and one woman, with some pulled from the sea and others
from the sinking sailboat, the coast guard said.
32 of the rescued were reportedly taken with a tanker to
Ierapetra and another 5 with a Super Puma helicopter to the
island of Karpathos.
According to survivors, there were a total of about 45 people on
board the vessel.
Refugee numbers drop
The number of refugees and migrants on the island of Lesvos
has dropped below 5,000 for the first time in 2016, the Migration
Ministry said on Tuesday.
In the figures released, the ministry said there are 4,994 people
on the North Aegean island that bore the brunt of migration
Of these, 4,441 live in the temporary facilities of Kara Tepe, 134
are unaccompanied minors, 412 live in apartments under the
Hestia plan, and 7 are detained by authorities.
The ministry also released record-low numbers of people
seeking asylum on the rest of the islands with refugee and
migrant flows: 642 on Chios, 1,013 on Samos, 78 on Leros and
201 on Kos.
