Greece and Cyprus competing in sailing championships in SA

28 January 2024 The eyes of the international sailing community have been focused on the Adelaide Maritime Club for the past month, which is hosting the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) Regatta World Championships from 24 to 31 January. On Thursday, January 25, the international event was officially opened at the Adelaide Maritime Club, by the Governor of South Australia her Excellency Frances Adamson AC, at the presence of the Hon Andrea Michaels MP Minister for Small and Family Business the Greek Consul General Georgios Psiachas and other guests. Indigenous artists welcomed local and international visitors with the traditional “Didgeridoo”. According to the organisers, 153 athletes from 53 countries are taking part in the games. Among them are Greek sailors Tasos Panagiotidis, European champion (coached by Nikos Papageorgiou), Giorgos Papadakos, European silver medallist, (coached by Nikos Chrysos) and world youth champion Dimitris Papadimitriou (coached by Vangelis Chimonas). Also participating is the two-time world champion and Olympic silver medallist Pavlos Kontides representing Cyprus. It should be noted that the South Australian International Laser Class Association (ILCA) regatta championships, will also be a qualifier for the Paris Olympic Games. Pavlos Kontides has already qualified.
