Australia interested in lasting solution in Cyprus,

says Greek Australian MP

President Christofias and Steve Georganas MP

May 26

Greek Australian Parliamentarian Steve Georganas has stressed the importance of recognising the contribution and efforts Cyprus President Demetris Christofias has put forward into the solution and the reunification of the island.
Speaking before the House of Representatives and referring to President
Christofias' official visit to the country, Georganas said that '' it is very important that we recognise the continuing, untiring efforts and the positive contribution that His Excellency Mr Christofias has made for the reunification of Cyprus in the framework of the agreed basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with a single citizenship and a single international personality, which is important for any nation and a settlement in accordance with the United Nations Security Council resolutions and the principles on which EU is founded''.
According to an official press release, issued here today, he noted that Australia follows with interest the developments that take place on the Cyprus issue, recognising the importance of reaching a just and lasting agreed settlement.
Georganas also stressed the importance of the presidential visit for all Cypriot and Greek Australians, saying that ''it represents the strengthening of the rich people- to people bonds which exist between our nations''.
He spoke of the ''vibrant relationship, strong and enduring bonds'' the two countries share as well as of the cooperation on many international fora such as the United Nations and the Commonwealth.
The President of the Republic is on a six day visit to Australia from 25-30 May. He is accompanied by First Lady Elsi Christofia, the Government Spokesman Stefanos Stephanou and government officials.
