Greek Union Leader warns of "Employment crash"

22 May 2011

The head of the GSEE (General Confedera-tion of Greek Workers) union, has warned that deeper austerity measures planned by the government would cause an "employment crash," pushing the jobless rate to new records.

Mr Yiannis Panagopoulos, leader of the GSEE union, accuses the European Union of imposing unfair cost-cutting measures that would cause suffering for pensioners and low-income wage earners.

The Greek government has already announced that it will comply with EU demands to broadly double the level of austerity measures for 2011 "to maintain its bailout loan commitments".
