Community Life March 2011
Happily we are having a lively public debate on Australian multiculturalism. More of it. And more debate on specific multicultural programs and achievements. We note here that in SA we had German community schools which started back in the 1840s. Nowadays many of the world’s languages are taught in Australia’s government and community schools.
We also like to note the following multicultural events that have come to our notice recently. One is the bilingual report on the various activities of the Greek Orthodox Community of SA by its President Vassilis Elovaris. This report also refers to the GOCSA 80-year history with its endeavours in education, social welfare, music and the arts and struggles for human rights.
The other is that readers can now purchase through the internet, Hugh Gilchrist’s Volume 3 of Australians and Greeks. In this book of over 400 pages the author traces in some details the life of many Australians in Greece and of many Greeks in Australia up until the early 1950s. We need more of such multicultural studies.
Another significant multicultural event celebrated by GOCSA is its annual commemoration of International Women’s Day on March 8th. This year will feature two speakers and a performance of passionate songs by the Meraki Trio with vocalist Johanna Saltis, who will sing the rousing Ti Romiosyni Min Ti Klais which she performed 30 years ago in 1981 for the GOCSA Polytechnic Commemoration. On piano will be Demeter Tsounis and on violin, Katerina Stevens.

The High Commission of Cyprus in Canberra is also participating in the Windows of Europe Film Festival with the film "Kalabush", produced by Cypriot directors Adonis Florides and Theodoros Nicolaides. The film is based on the story of an asylum seeker who believes that he has reached Italy but he has in fact arrived in Cyprus in the midst of the annual carnival celebrations. The film will be screening on 1 April 2011, 7.00pm, at the Mercury Cinema, 13 Morphett Street, Adelaide, (phone 84101934).
