Greek Community’s Biggest Morning Tea

July 2011

Five year old cancer patient Chelsea’s hope for winning the battle against her illness is as fresh as the Biggest Morning Tea, held recently at the Olympic Hall to help raise funds for her treatment.

The response of the community to this call for help was beyond belief and the 130 guests dug deep in their pockets, raising over $4000, whereas the $600 from ticket sales went towards the Cancer Council.

Olympic Hall, themed with Biggest Morning Tea’s blue and yellow and under the sounds of “Tselepi” band, welcomed guests who enjoyed the popular cuppa and various Greek delicacies donated by members of the community as well as the ladies of Taxiarches Women’s Fellowship.

Mr Spyros Lethrangomites, Chelsea’s grand father delivered a moving speech about their little granddaughter’s brave fight against cancer when he was called on stage.

“When she was born, I named her ‘Aphrodite of Cyprus’. This is how beautiful she is. And then, in January we received the worst news a parent can receive for their child”, Mr Lethrangomites said.

Mr Lethrangomites thanked the Greek Orthodox Community of South Australia for their initiative to help little Chelsea and her family. He also thanked all guests for being so generous and said that hope isn’t lost.

“We still hope and we will never stop hoping when there are people like you that are willing to help”, he said.

Mr Lethrangomites’s speech was followed by a fund-raising raffle and the organisers of the event encouraged everyone to give generously.

Five year old Chelsea Lethrangomites suffers from Glioblastoma Multiforme, Grade IV, Brain Stem Tumor and she needs to fly to Germany for hyperthermia treatment, the cost of which is $25,000.

The Biggest Morning Tea which was held in conjunction with the Community’s “Trapezia tis Agapes” and Community Care Services was the first of its kind for the Greek Orthodox Community.
