Aged Care Homes do not meet standards
August 2024
A
new
analysis
by
the
UTS
Ageing
Research
Collaborative
has
highlighted
that
many
Australian
aged
care
residents
are
not
receiving
the
mandated
levels
of
care,
despite
increases
in
government
expenditure in the sector.
The
Collaborative’
s
mid-year
report
for
2023-2024
revealed
that
nearly
two-thirds
of
aged
care
homes
were
failing
to
meet
required
direct
care
standards,
despite
the
fact
that
funding
had
been
increased to support these targets.
In
order
to
improve
outcomes,
the
Federal
Government
set
minimum
care
standards,
requiring
an
average
of
200
minutes
of
care
per
resident
per
day,
with
a
minimum
of
40
minutes
by
a
registered
nurse.
However,
as
of
December
2023,
only
half
of
the
providers
met
either
care
targets,
with
only
36
per
cent meeting both.
The shortfalls in care time have raised concerns within the industry, as the required care time is set
to increase even further later this year.
